KDP, PUK senior officials felicitate new Iraqi PM on government formation

<p style="text-align:left">Following Parliament&amp;rsquo;s approval of Mustafa al-Kadhimi as Iraq's new Prime Minister on Wednesday night, senior leaders in the Kurdistan Region's two largest parties congratulated the new premier, but emphasized that the rights of the Region must be respected.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani of the Kurdistan Democratic Party took to Twitter on Thursday morning, May 7, and wished Kadhimi well in his new role.

&ldquo;I congratulate Mr. Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on his election as the new Prime Minister of Iraq and wish him the best,&rdquo; Barzani wrote.

&ldquo;I hope his government succeeds in providing security, stability, and services for Iraqis and reinstates the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region,&rdquo; he added.

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Co-President Lahur Sheikh Jangi had a similar message, sending congratulations and tweeting his hope that Khadimi's new government would &ldquo;provide much needed stability and security for the country and work within the framework of the constitution to ensure all rights are observed for everyone in Iraq.&rdquo;

Overnight, Change Movement MP and former speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament Yousif Mohammed said that his party opposed the prime minister in Wednesday night's vote because the new government did not appear committed to guaranteeing the rights of the people of the Kurdistan Region or solving the issue of the disputed areas, NRT reported.

So far, the Council of Representatives has approved one Kurdish nominee to the cabinet, with the justice and foreign affairs ministries still empty and likely to be filled by a member of the PUK and KDP respectively.

The three parties sit in coalition in Erbil as the members of the tripartite Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet.
