Erbil, Baghdad negotiation on budget freeze will continue: spokesman

The spokesperson for Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, who is leading a KRG delegation of officials to Baghdad, said on Thursday, May 7, that negotiations continue with the federal government, but gave few specifics about how those talks are progressing.

Spokesperson Samir Hawrami said that federal and KRG negotiators have exchanged numerous documents and plans in an effort to resolve their ongoing budget dispute and ensure that Erbil receives enough money to fund its operations.

Last month, Baghdad stopped sending money to pay public salaries in the Kurdistan Region, after growing weary of Erbil’s refusal to live up to its obligations under the 2019 federal budget law.

“Senior officials from the ministries of finance, planning, and oil and senior officials from [Iraq’s oil export marketer] SOMO, along with some advisors of the prime minister, participated in the meeting,” Hawrami said.

According to NRT he added: “The meetings will continue on [Friday].”

Earlier on Thursday, the head of the Council of Representatives’ finance committee, Haitham al-Jabouri, requested documents and reports detailing the KRG’s payroll and oil revenues.
