Putin says Astana peace process will normalize situation in Syria

<p style="text-align: left;">More decisive steps are being taken towards normalizing the situation in Syria through the tripartite video conference by Russia, Iran, and Turkey, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday.

Iran, Turkey, and Russia (the three guarantors of the Astana peace process) have started to discuss the Syria peace process via video conference.

The trilateral meetings had decreased the level of violence in the war-torn Syria, the Russian president said.

He further added that Moscow agrees with Tehran's assessment for the continuing cooperation in Syria.

The Russian president further went on to say that the level of violence in Syria has dropped significantly and the activities of the Islamic State (IS) and other terrorist groups in Syria have been decreased.

Referring to Russia's intensive cooperation with Turkey regarding the Idlib region, Putin said that "we are working together to implement the September 2018 Sochi Agreement and its additional protocol dated March 5, 2020", IRNA reported.

The unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria without the approval of the UN Security Council have a negative impact on the situation in Syria. In fact, these sanctions are illegal, the Russian leader further said.

He pointed out that cooperation among Iran, Russia, and Turkey within the framework of the Astana process is stabilizing Syria.

The sixth Astana summit was scheduled to be hosted by Iran, but the coronavirus outbreak delayed the Astana peace summit.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a message hailed the constructive virtual Astana talks.

"Just concluded very constructive (virtual) summit of the Astana Process, hosted by Pres. @HassanRouhani," Zarif wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

"Parties agreed to continue coordination among the three guarantors, focusing on tension reduction, political process &amp; humanitarian relief," he added.
