Iraqi PM survives assassination attempt

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said that he was unhurt after an apparent assassination attempt in the early hours of Sunday morning, November 7, at his residence in Baghdad’s Green Zone.

Iraq’s Security Media Cell said that the attempt was carried out using an explosive-laden drone, but that it "failed” and that the prime minister "is in good health.” Three drones were involved in the attack, but that two were shot down, AFP said.
Kadhimi also said that he was "fine” and called for "calm and restraint from everyone.”
"The missiles of treachery will not discourage the believers,” Kadhimi said, adding that the security forces would not be deterred in enforcing rule of law.
The attack came as some groups continue to agitate in the wake of their poor performance in last month’s parliamentary election.
On Friday, clashes between the groups and the security forces left several dozen people injured, with some claiming that at least one person was killed.
No one has claimed responsibility, but the attack received significant attention on Telegram channels affiliated with the some anti-government groups.
Kata'ib Hezbollah Security Official Abu Ali al-Askari said in a statement that no one in Iraq has the desire to lose a drone over the house of a "former prime minister.”
Askari said that, for whoever wants to harm Kadhimi, "there are very many, less expensive, and more secure ways to achieve [that].”
"Practicing the role of the victim has become one of the outdated methods,” he added.
On Sunday, Fatah Alliance leader Hadi al-Amiri said "we strongly condemn the targeting of the prime minister's house.”
"We call on the relevant authorities to investigate the attack and reveal the facts so that the perpetrators of the attack can be arrested and punished," he added.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani condemned "the failed attempt to assassinate” Kadhimi.
"This terrorist act is a dangerous development that threatens security and stability in the country and portends dire consequences,” he added.
Iraqi President Barham Salih called the attack a "dangerous transgression and a heinous crime against Iraq [that] requires unity of position in confronting the evil men who are stalking the security of this country and the safety of its people."
"We cannot accept that Iraq will be dragged into chaos and a coup against its constitutional system," he added.
Political figures across the political spectrum in the Kurdistan Region also denounced the incident, including Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani.
The US also denounced the attack, with State Department Spokesperson Ned Price saying that it was "directed at the heart of the Iraqi state.”
"We are relieved to learn the Prime Minister was unharmed,” he added.
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq condemned the assassination attempt "in the strongest terms" and encouraged "all sides to take responsibility for de-escalation and to engage in dialogue to ease political tensions, upholding the national interest of Iraq."
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance, which has a training mission in Iraq, "supports the Iraqi defence and security institutions as they fight terrorism and uphold their country’s independence and sovereignty."
