PUK political office meets amid leadership impasse

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Politburo met on Saturday, November 6, to discuss the government formation process following Iraq’s parliamentary elections last month.

The meeting, which was chaired by PUK Co-President Bafel Talabani, stressed the need for unity among the Kurdish political parties, according to a statement released by the party.

The members also discussed the state of the Kurdistan Region and the internal affairs of the PUK, which is undergoing a nasty power struggle.

Prior to the meeting, Talabani snapped that PUK Co-President Lahur Sheikh Jangi and other members have been "expelled” and not suspended in response to a question posed by a reporter from a media outlet affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

Earlier this week, Talabani issued a letter declaring that he had kicked Sheikh Jangi and several allies out of the PUK after the latter criticized the party’s direction under Talabani.

Sheikh Jangi released his own letter rejecting the expulsions.
