Dabagh told Voice of America in an interview that Iran has had an indirect effect on the formation of the new government of the region.
“The Region’s political parties have not tried to have a representative in the name of all the parties. I am only the KRG representative from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan [PUK], not all the political parties,” he said.
The PUK is generally seen as having closer relations with Iran than the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), which is thought to have better relations with Turkey.
He went on to argue, however, that PUK’s relationship with Iran was roughly equivalent with that of the KDP.
“Neither is the KDP relationship with Iran less that the PUK’s, nor is the PUK relationship with Iran more than the KDP’s,” Dabagh said.
