A PUK Leadership member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told NRT on Monday that the talks were conducted during a closed-door meeting.
The PUK told Barzani that the Kirkuk issue needed to be decided before the formation of a new KRG cabinet, the member said.
“The request has been made for the sake of the people and supporters of the PUK in Kirkuk, not to oppose the [Kurdistan Democratic Party],” he added.
“Masrour Barzani said he would discuss it with his father,” he continued.
The PUK is now waiting for a response from Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani, according to the official.
“The KDP is expected to respond to the PUK in the next two days. The response will be discussed within the PUK Leadership Council,” he said.
Since the city's recapture by the Iraqi army and Hashd al-Shaabi in October 2017, the Kirkuk issue has been a major sticking-point between the KDP and PUK, especially with regard to who the parties select as the Kurdish candidate for governor and how the provincial council functions.
The relationship between the two has been rocky of late, especially since the PUK caucus in the Kurdistan Parliament boycotted the vote to elect a new President of the Kurdistan Region on May 28.
The PUK said that the KDP had failed to step up and implement their agreements on Kirkuk, Baghdad, and the new KRG cabinet.
