Baghdad and Erbil form working group to settle differences

<p style="text-align:left">Following senior-level talks in Erbil on Thursday, July 25, the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have decided to form a number of technical working groups in an effort to resolve their differences.

The meeting took place under the auspices of the High Level Joint Committee, which includes officials from both governments.
According to a press release from the KRG, the focus was &ldquo;primarily on the disputed territories, budgetary and financial issues, and oil and gas.&rdquo;
According to NRT the statement characterized the discussions as &ldquo;cordial and open&rdquo; and emphasized that issues must be solved through constitutional means.
The two sides agreed to meet again next week in Baghdad.
Federal Oil Minister Thamir Ghadhban, Finance Minister Fuad Hussein, and National Security Adviser Faleh al-Fayyadh participated in the discussions in Erbil, as did KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, Minister of Finance and Economy Awat Janab Noori, and Interior Minister Rebar Ahmed Khalid.
Barzani visited Baghdad earlier this month for similar talks.
One of the stated priorities of the new KRG cabinet is to develop a better relationship with the federal government.
