U.S. warns Iraq over postponing May elections

The United States “strongly” supports holding Iraqi elections on May 12 in line with the Iraqi Constitution, U.S. embassy to Iraq said on Thursday, January 18.

“Postponing the elections would set a dangerous precedent, undermining the constitution and damaging Iraq’s long-term democratic development,” the embassy said in a statement

According to NRT the embassy added the U.S. Agency for International Development is providing Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission with six election advisers who will help the commission strengthen its electoral systems, personnel and processes.

“Support for Iraq’s democratic institutions is a key part of the United States’ ongoing commitment to a federal, democratic, prosperous, and unified Iraq. By exercising their constitutional right to vote, Iraqis will signal their commitment to governance through peaceful processes rather than through violence,” the statement read.

Iraqi parliament is in meeting to vote on the date of Iraq’s elections.

Lawmakers will vote on the date of the elections secretly.

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Forces Alliance headed by Salah Jabouri offered two suggestions to the Parliament’s presidency, one of which called for the delay of the Iraqi elections.
