Turkey warns to retaliate against any US sanction

<p style="text-align:left">Turkey will retaliate if the United States takes negative steps against Ankara, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday, December 11, when asked about the prospect of Washington imposing sanctions over Ankara&amp;rsquo;s purchase of Russian S-400 defense systems.

Cavusoglu said in an interview with Turkish broadcaster A Haber that in case of US sanctions, the Incirlik Air Base and Kurecik Radar Station, where US soldiers are stationed, in Turkey would come into question.
Congress members must understand that it is not possible to get anywhere with sanctions,&rdquo; he warned.
Cavusoglu also said Turkey was open to alternatives to buying US F-35 jets, including from Russia, after Ankara was suspended from the program over the S-400 purchase, Reuters reported.
Incirlik airbase in southern Turkey has been used by the United States as a main base in the Middle East and more recently in the fight against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq and Syria.
Kurecik in eastern Turkey is a key NATO base.
Ankara and Washington have been at loggerheads over NATO ally Turkey&rsquo;s purchase of the Russian S-400 system, which Washington says is not compatible with NATO defenses and poses a threat to its F-35 stealth fighter jets, which Lockheed Martin Corp is developing.
Infuriating many members of Congress, Turkey shrugged off the threat of US sanctions and began receiving its first S-400 deliveries in July. In response, Washington removed Turkey from the F-35 program.
US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s administration has held off on imposing sanctions despite Trump signing a sweeping sanctions law, known as CAATSA, in 2017 mandating them for countries that do business with Russia&rsquo;s military.
Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen called on the Trump administration on December 2 to impose sanctions on Turkey over its purchase of a Russian missile defense system.
