On Tuesday, January 14, Sadr urged Iraqis to engage in large-scale protests against the presence of US troops in Iraq.
Amiri, who leads the powerful Badr Organization militia, said in a statement on Tuesday that he supported the Sadr’s call for demonstrations against the US presence, NRT reported.
“We will not accept invasion by the US … Iraq should restore the sovereignty of its land and space,” Amiri said.
The Council of Representatives approved a legislation that calls for the end of the presence of foreign troops in Iraq after a US strike assassinated top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi Muhandis on January 3.
US President Donald Trump said that if Iraq asked US forces to leave and it was not done on a friendly basis, “we will charge them sanctions like they’ve never seen before ever.”
