A spokesman for the Sulaimani Police, Sardar Mahmoud, told NRT that a fire had broken out at several warehouses in Tasluja area.
“A warehouse of arms and ammunition belonging to the Peshmerga forces likely caught fire due to [an accidental spark],” he added.
According to the report the fire had not been controlled, but that the firefighters were trying to control it.
He added that sounds of strong explosions can be heard from the depot.
A number of people have left their homes due to the large fire, witnesses said.
A large explosion rocked a warehouse of arms and ammunition early on Saturday in the district of Bahirka in the province of Erbil.
Saturday's explosion was third of its kind in Erbil in less than two years. In August 2017, an explosion rocked an ammunition depot and weapons storage belonging to Zirvani's forces, and a fire broke out last August in another arms depot near Erbil airport.
