“The Leadership Council has decided to hold congress in 2020 and gave the necessary authority to the Political Bureau to start the regulatory proceedings,” the statement said.
According to NRT the statement added that the general meeting of the party was required under the party’s internal by-laws and necessary in order to respond to changing conditions in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
The KDP’s historical rival and partner, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), held its first party congress in nearly a decade in December. The Kurdistan Islamic Union also held its quadrennial congress in December.
During the meeting on Saturday, the Leadership Council also discussed developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the Middle East region.
“The actions and reactions that have happened and the decisions of the Iraqi parliament and government in the past few months are far from the principles the state of Iraq that was built after 2003, which include partnership, balance, and harmony in governance for all the ethnic and religious components and the participation of all in critical decisions,” the statement said of the current state of affairs.
The Leadership Council reaffirmed its support for the agenda that it ran on during the 2018 parliamentary and regional elections.
