The polls are held as currently scheduled on October 10 and would see international observers from the UN and other monitoring groups.
During a meeting with Canadian Ambassador to Iraq Ulric Shannon, Sheikh Jangi said that the elections are an “important democratic” process through which legitimate rights can be obtained and real change achieved.
“We emphasized that the unity of the Kurdish parties paves the way for us to attain our rights and results in strengthening the Kurdish position in Baghdad,” Sheikh Jangi said according to a readout of the meeting posted on Facebook.
He added that returning to dialogue is the best option for resolving ongoing intra-Kurdish issues.
On May 1, the PUK and Change Movement (Gorran) announced that they would jointly contest Iraq’s October parliamentary election as the Kurdistan Coalition list, with Sheikh Jangi serving as head of the list.
Ambassador Shannon and Head of Office of Canada in Erbil Ashley Durec also met other PUK Co-President Bafel Talabani and with senior Gorran Movement officials during a visit to Sulaimani.
