Bafel Talabani meets U.S. ambassador in Baghdad

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) co-Chair Bafel Talabani met with U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Matthew Tueller in Baghdad on Monday, February 14.

The two sides discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as well as efforts by the parties to form a new Iraqi government, Talabani’s office said in a statement.

Both sides stressed the need for dialogue to resolve the constitutional issues, the statement read.

Talabani, for his part, said the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) had made “all efforts to unify the different opinions for the sake of stability, national consensus and reaching a concord for political reconciliation”, according to the statement.

“We want to preserve the national unity which is presence and to sit on the table of dialogue for the sake of the high goals,” Talabani was quoted as saying.

Talabani is in Baghdad to hold talks with Iraqi parties to discuss the formation of a new Iraqi government.

Earlier Talabani met with leaders of the Coordination Framework, a consortium of Iraqi Shiite political forces opposing the October 10 election results, a source revealed on Monday.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that a delegation from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan held a meeting with Nouri al-Maliki, Hadi al-Ameri, and Qais al-Khazali from the Shiite Coordination Framework at the residence of the late President Jalal Talabani downtown the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

"The meeting revolved around the presidency row and the formation of the federal government," the source said.
