ISIS attacks Hashd al-Shaabi in Iraq's Makhmour, killing one

Islamic State (ISIS) militants killed a member of Hashid al-Shaabi in an attack in Makhmour late on Monday, Iraqi media reported.

Iraqi media reported that ISIS militants attacked a Popular Mobilization Forces (known as Hashd al-Shaabi) point near Maizila village in Makhmour, southeast of Mosul.

One Hashd al-Shaabi fighter was killed and two others were wounded in the attack, a security source told national Iraqi news agency.

A source told Shafaq News that another Hashd al-Shaabi fighter was injured.

Recently, ISIS militants have increased attacks and activities in Makhmour and the provinces of Kirkuk, Saladin, Nineveh, Anbar and Baghdad.

The Iraqi military foiled an ISIS attack in Makhmour on Monday evening after the militants used a motorcycle to attack a military point there.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
