Death strike is not a good struggle method, party leader tells KurdPress

<p style="text-align: left;">The Secretary General of the Kurdistan Socialist Party of Turkey (PSK) said: The death of Ebru Timtik clarified two issues; one is the humiliation of the Turkish judiciary and the other is the inhumanity of the "death strike", which in general showed that this method of struggle is not suitable for today.

Lawyers Ebru Timtik and Itac Onsal were arrested and tried in 2018 on charges of membership in "terrorist groups" and sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Masoud Tak said: "The case of both lawyers did not contain any documents or evidence that showed they are members of" terrorist groups".

"Ebru Timtik and other imprisoned lawyers first went on a hunger strike to protest against this unjust sentence, and then they refused to food and drink, and finally went on a death strike. As a result of this hunger strike, the situation of both people changed. It deteriorated. Human rights groups said they should be released from prison due to their poor physical condition and that it was dangerous for them to remain in prison, the party leader told KurdPress

He further continued about the case that: "The Turkish court did not pay attention to these demands and eventually Timtik lost her life. Timtik was not the only one who lost her life due to the hunger strike. In the history of Turkey many politicians, elites and writers have died as a result of hunger strikes in Turkish prisons, and examples of which have been observed since 2000.

Referring to this type of strike in Turkish prisons, the Secretary General of the PSK said: "The hunger strike in Turkish prisons is a form of protest and resistance by political prisoners. They take refuge in it.

Mr. Tak added: "There have always been hunger strikes, but the 'death strike' is a much more important issue that these prisoners are dealing with. Those who go on a death strike are different people and have a strong will against the political system and they sacrifice their lives for and one of those people was Tintik.

"In my opinion, today the death strike is no longer a good method of struggle. Because today there are different ways to express our opinions inside and outside, and Ebru and her friends could spread their protests widely inside and outside Turkey. They informed the public about their situation,&rdquo; he further noted.

Massoud Tak pointed out: "They should have stopped this action, but we saw that Turkish legal organizations and courts also turned a blind eye to their situation and they died. This indifference is not acceptable at all because democratic demands are not more important than the lives of individuals. Human souls should not become a means to demand democratic rights, and death should not become the goal of democratic institutions. It is true that patriotic people sacrifice their lives for their ideals and martyr, but martyrdom should not become the main goal.&rdquo;

The Secretary General of the PSK reminded: "Some individuals and human rights groups have criticized the method of the Timtik&rsquo;s strike, and these criticisms are right to some extent. But we must not forget that the main reason behind the death of Timtik is the authoritarian governments and security agencies in Turkey.&rdquo;

"Turkish courts issue verdicts on the order of Security Directorate and sentence civil activists and patriots to prison on "unseen witnesses " and without having acceptable documents,&rdquo; the official also told KurdPress news agency.

"The death of Ebru Timtik clarified two issues, one is the humiliation of the Turkish judiciary and the other is the inhumanity of the death strike, which generally showed that it is not a modern method of struggle,&rdquo; Massoud Tak said finally.
