Washington Examiner warns Turkey is seeking to occupy Shingal

<p style="text-align: left;">The Washington Examiner has called on the United States to help oust non-Yazidi elements from Shingal in Kurdistan Region of Iraq and rebuild the region through the government, noting that the Yazidi-populated city has become a battleground between Turkey, the Kurdistan Workers&amp;rsquo; Party (PKK) and some Kurdish parties in the Kurdish region.

Referring to the 2014 ISIS genocide of Yazidis in Shingal, The Examiner called the incident a strategic mistake by the Iraqi Kurdish region in leaving them alone and warned of the involvement of other elements in Shingal, such as Turkey, under the pretext of the PKK presence which may prevent the Yazidis from returning to their ancestral homeland.

The magazine noted that two senior State Department officials, Joey Hood and David Capley, had called for a regional coalition of Iraq, Turkey and the Kurdistan Region to confront the PKK in Shingal and described the decision as a result of attempts by Turkish lobby group at the US State Department and described it as highly destructive.

The paper has also noted that after the failure of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to support the Yazidis in Shingal against the ISIS attack, only groups close to the PKK defended the Yazidis, believing that this did not favor the Yazidis because Turkey considers the PKK a terrorist group and may be subject to Turkish destructive entry into the region.

Noting that US trust in Turkey is naive, the paper described Washington's efforts to involve Turkey in the Shingal issue as destructive and unconstructive. The magazine has argued that Turkey's entry into Shingal is tantamount to more aggressive actions in the region. In addition, Shingal is a part of the Iraqi territory, and Iraqis must resolve the issue of Shingal, it added.

The Washington Examiner reminds that James Jeffrey, the US Special Representative for Syria, once made this mistake and caused a catastrophe by giving the green light to Turkey to enter northeastern Syria. Turkey and its affiliated rebel forces carried out racial and ethnic cleansing after occupying some Kurdish regions in Syria.

The Washington Examiner has stressed that the way to help Yazidis in Shingal is not to open the door to Turkey or to militias affiliated with Iraqi Kurdish parties. The State Department should focus its efforts on improving the Iraqi government's reconstruction mechanism in Shinfal and, while providing financial support to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, prevent political groups from trying to prevent Yazidis from returning to the city.

Yazidis should be allowed to determine their true representative, not to be sacrificed by outside forces for their own political and ideological purposes.

The magazine has further warned that the US State Department should not allow Turkey to enter Shingal under any pretext. If Turkey is given a green light to enter Shingal, it will be another example of the success of the Turkish State Department lobby in sacrificing Kurds and Yazidis.
