In a statement to the Iraqi Al-Sabah newspaper, Grand Imam of al-Azhar said, “Iraq is a beloved country in my heart, I hope to visit and meet its sincere people.”

Ahmed el-Tayeb has expressed sympathy for the Kurds in the past, and had positive attitudes towards the Kurdish question. He is expected to visit Iraq and Kurdistan Region soon.
