Sistani’s representative delivered his statement during a Friday sermon on July 27, NRT reported.
He encouraged the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to respond urgently to protesters’ demands for jobs and basic services, the statement read.
“The current government must work urgently to implement citizens’ demands to reduce their suffering and misery,” Sistani’s representative said in Karbala.
“If the government disengages from its commitments, the people will only have to develop their peaceful protest methods” said Abdulmahdi al-Karbalai.
Hundreds of people took to the streets in Iraq’s southern cities against shortages of jobs and basic services over the last three weeks.
