Ayatollah Sistani backs demands of Iraqi demonstrators

<p style="text-align:left">Iraq&amp;rsquo;s top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called for the demands of the demonstrators to be met and for a government to be formed &amp;ldquo;as soon as possible.&amp;rdquo;

Sistani&rsquo;s representative delivered his statement during a Friday sermon on July 27, NRT reported.
He encouraged the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to respond urgently to protesters&rsquo; demands for jobs and basic services, the statement read.
&ldquo;The current government must work urgently to implement citizens&rsquo; demands to reduce their suffering and misery,&rdquo; Sistani&rsquo;s representative said in Karbala.
&ldquo;If the government disengages from its commitments, the people will only have to develop their peaceful protest methods&rdquo; said Abdulmahdi al-Karbalai.
Hundreds of people took to the streets in Iraq&rsquo;s southern cities against shortages of jobs and basic services over the last three weeks.
