The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi central government agreed on October 9 to normalize the situation in Shingal. One of the clauses in the agreement emphasizes the withdrawal of various forces in the city, including forces that are said to be close to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The National Interest magazine warns of the failure of the agreement because it believes the United States has been clumsily involved in Iraq affairs, including Shingal.
Recalling the desire of some US officials to form an alliance with Turkey, the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Region to expel the PKK from Shingal, the magazine said that the United States supports Turkey in this plan and believes that Turkey benefits the most from this agreement.
Instead of interfering awkwardly in Shingal, the magazine has called on the US government to pressure the KRG and the Iraqi central government to fight corruption and improve their governing systems.
The magazine stressed that if the governments of Erbil and Baghdad focus on fighting corruption and eliminating nepotism, this will lead allied forces close to the PKK in Shingal to stay away from the PKK and get closer to the government in Baghdad and Erbil.
The National Interest warns that the US President Donald Trump administration's efforts in the Kurdish-controlled region of Syria, led by James Jeffrey, are affecting the Syrian Kurdish self-government, and that the United States continues to pay for this wrong policy and the recent Shingal deal may end in the same fate.
