Releasing a statement on Tuesday, October 2, Barzani said the current method used to elect the president was not the one used in previous parliaments.
“Either a Kurdish candidate must have been chosen among the biggest bloc or the Kurdish factions have agreed upon,” Barzani said.
“The current mechanism cannot be accepted. We will have our stance in the near future.”
Lawmakers elected Barham Salih, a leading member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) as new President of Iraq late on Tuesday.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) did not manage to come to an agreement on Tuesday following a meeting.
Both parties held a meeting on Monday night in Baghdad to discuss the position. They, however, failed to reach an agreement on nominating one candidate for the post as requested by the Iraqi blocs.
According to the Iraqi constitution, a candidate for the position should be elected by the Iraqi parliament by the end of Tuesday.
