An number of Arab tribes in northern Syria’s Manbij have called for an intervention by the Turkish military against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), Arab News reported.

The call arrived following the YPG’s call for compulsory enlistment for the region’s prominent Arab tribes such as the Baghara and Ghanaim, it said.
Turkey refers to YPG-controlled parts of northern Syria as a ‘’terror-corridor’’ as it designates the U.S.-backed group a terrorist organisation that is an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an armed group that has been in war in Turkey for over 30 years.
In the predominantly Arab northern town of Manbij, which was captured by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) whose backbone is made up of the YPG in 2016, locals are looking to become liberated from Kurdish rule, Arab News said.
Tribes such as the Bani Said, Naim, Fennel, Popna, Aldamalkh, Majadameh and Al-Bustalan have all released statements to this effect, it noted.
“They’re carrying out raids, illegally arresting tribe members, assassinating anyone who dares oppose their policies, and forcing people to join demonstrations in favor of the YPG,” Mohammed Najouma, deputy head of the Stabilization Committee in Aleppo governorate, told Arab News.
Washington’s insistence on maintaining its partnership with the YPG despite local opposition, it said, ‘’may shake regional balances and undermine the already fragile implementation of the roadmap,’’ concerning Manbij agreed upon by Turkey and the United States.
“Local opposition voices are becoming stronger, and this could be an excuse for Ankara to enter Manbij as it did before in Afrin,” Arab News quoted Ammar Hamou, a Jordan-based Syrian journalist, as saying.
Turkey has urged the U.S. to complete implementation of the road map - calling for the withdrawal of Kurdish fighters of YPG from the northern Syrian district of Manbij to the east of River Euphrates - by the end of this year.
