"Our air defense systems thwarted an Israeli aggression, and prevented it from achieving any of its goals," a military source told the Syrian Arab News Agency on Sunday.
The attack, said to have taken place on January 11, consisted of missiles filed by Israeli warplanes, toward the vicinity of Damascus, with most of the incoming projectiles reported to have been successfully shot down.
Earlier, the Syrian Ministry of Transport reported that the Israeli attack, taking place on the night of January 11-12, targeted the Damascus International Airport, damaging several buildings, including an aircraft repair hanger, and hitting several planes.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli jets had attacked targets in Syria.
Syria sent letters to the UN demanding immediate actions to prevent new Israeli attacks, saying the strikes were an attempt to "prolong the crisis and the war against the terrorists in Syria," and that they were only possible thanks to the "military, political and media cover" Tel Aviv enjoys from the United States.
