Demirtas, who has been incarcerated since November 2016, tweeted on Friday that the election would be a “historic opportunity” to take to make changes in Turkey.
“You are the direct determinant of this election. There is a historic opportunity here to be taken, not just to retake the municipalities from the trustees,” Demirtas said.
“The strategic votes that we will use in the cities will be an indicator of our strength.”
He also called on the voters to avoid political discussions while heading toward the polling stations in order to forestall disruption. He also urging voters to support the HDP in the elections.
Earlier, HDP lawmaker Imam Tascier told NRT that the party hoped to win 130 municipalities on Sunday. He said nearly 96 municipalities had been taken over by trustees of the Justice and Development Party (AKP).
