Abdul Mahdi said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday evening that the goal of his visit to Riyadh would be to improve economic relations between Iraq and the other countries in the region.
The prime minister recently visited Cairo and Tehran and signed a number of economic agreements during those trips.
Historically, Iraq and Saudi Arabia have been rivals, but Iraqi officials have been clear that in the future they want Iraq to be a bridge in the region, where tensions can be put aside in the broader interest of economic prosperity.
On April 9, Iraq Council of Ministers announced that it had approved a request to open a Saudi consulate in Najaf, along with a reciprocal facility in the eastern Saudi city of Dammam.
