Shiekh Omar told his party’s media that what the KDP spokesperson's remarks about the selection of an independent candidate for the Kirkuk governorship related to a proposal for a joint committee and that no decisions were made regarding the proposal, PUK reported.
“The delays in the process of the formation of the ninth Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet was due to the parliamentary majoritarian system that marginalized other political parties, imposed a one-rule party system, and ignored the PUK's insistence on real partnership and balance, which form the basis for a robust governance,” he said.
“Eagerness for [resolving] Kirkuk and areas including in Article 140 [of Iraqi constitution] emanate from a united and national policy among all the political parties, not an attempt to neglect a legitimate demand of a political party like the PUK, which achieved the majority votes in Kirkuk in a difficult political situation and proved the Kurdishness of Kirkuk again,”
The Kurdistan Parliament elected Nechirvan Barzani as the President of the Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, May 28.
Barzani was selected with 68 votes from the 81 lawmakers who were present in the session.
Meanwhile, the PUK Politburo released a statement saying its caucus would not participate in the session.
“The Kurdistan Democratic Party [KDP] has not stepped up to implement our agreements with it. The KDP always makes obstacles for the nomination of a governor from the PUK [in Kirkuk, as we have agreed on],” the statement read.
