With the help of members of the US-led Coalition, Kurdistan Region’s military is working to restructure its ranks, unify the troops, and bring about fundamental reforms in hopes of a stronger army.
Speaking to BasNews, Major General Babakr Faqe, General Director of Media and National Awareness, said the new Peshmerga minister, Shorish Ismail, discussed at length the reform package with his predecessor last week, reiterating commitment and comprehensive plans to implement it.
“However, reform requires time. It may not be implemented entirely within a few months,” the official said.
“There is a plan that we follow. Part of it has already been implemented with other parts being underway.”
A committee, made up of four senior Peshmerga commanders, together with military advisors from the UK, US, and Germany, are currently working on the Peshmerga Ministry’s reform package. So far, they have held 35 meetings with the plan ongoing.
