According to a statement by State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, Pompeo “stressed continued appreciation for progress in resolving outstanding Baghdad-Erbil issues according to the Iraqi constitution’s framework for dialogue.”
“The Secretary also underscored the continued commitment of the United States to the government and people of Iraq,” the statement added.
Barzani took over from his cousin, current President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani, on July 10, when Parliament voted to approve him as prime minister.
Nearly all members of the cabinet were also approved in the same session, with only the natural resources minister post left vacant.
