Canadian party urges government not to send weapons to Peshmerga

<p style="text-align: left;">The Canadian Conservative party called on the country to provide Ukraine with the military equipment meant to be provided to the Kurdish Peshmerga fighting Islamic State (IS) in Iraq.

Canada had plans to provide the Kurdistan Region with $9.5 million worth of military equipment, including rifles, machine-guns, light mortars, grenade launchers, and anti-tank missiles, according to the North Shore News.

The military equipment has yet to be transferred to the Peshmerga due to the deterioration of relationship between the Kurds and Iraqi government last year, as well as concerns that the weapons will end up in the hands of paramilitary groups accused of committing war crimes in Iraq.

North Shore News reported that the Conservatives wants the military equipment, which remains in storage at a Canadian Forces supply depot, to be sent to Ukraine instead.

Conservative defense critic James Bezan cited by the media outlet as saying "They've been allowing these weapons to sit in storage and collect dust and, meanwhile, the violence in Ukraine has taken on a new spring offensive.&rdquo;

"Instead of letting those weapons go to waste, let's get them in the hands of people that can use them."
