Pompeo welcomes US-Turkey deal on safe zone in Syria

<p style="text-align:left">US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has welcomed the talks between Washington and Ankara on creating a safe zone in Syria, saying that "important progress" has been made.

"Pleased that talks between the U.S. &amp; Turkey led to important progress towards establishing a sustainable security mechanism to address our shared security concerns in Northeast Syria," Pompeo wrote on Twitter on Friday.
"Establishing a safe zone would be a big step towards achieving peace &amp; security," he added.
After Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened on Sunday that a military operation against the Syrian Kurdish forces was imminent, officials from Ankara and Washington met on Wednesday to discuss the Syrian crisis, BasNews reported.
They reportedly reached a deal to establish a joint operation center in Turkey to cooperate and manage a planned safe zone in eastern Syria.
