State-appointed mayor in Turkey’s Mardin fires 150 workers

<p style="text-align:left">The government-appointed mayor in Turkey&amp;rsquo;s southeastern Kurdish city of Mardin has fired 150 municipal workers, pro-Kurdish Mezopotamya Agency reported on Thursday.

Ahmet Turk, the elected mayor of Mardin from the predominantly-Kurdish People&rsquo;s Democratic Party (HDP) was among the three mayors the Turkish Interior Ministry removed from duty last week over terror links.
Mustafa Yaman, who is also the governor of the province, was appointed temporarily as the new mayor.
The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK) Mardin branch said they expected that layoffs would continue.
The 150 municipal workers who were fired had kept their jobs when the government dismissed the elected mayor of the province previously following a failed coup attempt in 2016, Mezopotamya said.
The Turkish government accuses HDP mayors of directing municipal resources to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been fighting inside Turkey for more than three decades.
