The Iraqi forces entered the Kurdish disputed territories in a military incursion in October last year in which the Hashd al-Shaabi militiamen also had American weapons, including the M1s.
According to The Drive news agency, Iraq's Ministry of Defense 9th Division's 35th Brigade had received 39 T-90s thanks, and the unit's Abrams had gone to the 34th Brigade.
The move is also believed to be another sign of Moscow's attempt to have more influence in the Arab country, the source added.
However, the Iraqi authorities pointed out that the Russian specialists have retrained the 35th Brigade's officers and related members to operate the new tanks, without giving further details on the trainers' identity.
