Minister says Italy will continue support to Peshmerga forces

<p style="text-align:left">Italian Minister of Defense Lorenzo Guerini has said that Italy will continue to support the Peshmerga forces, since Islamic State (IS) militants still pose a threat to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

After arriving in Erbil on Tuesday, December 17, Guerini met separately with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.
The KRG said in a statement that Guerini and the KRG prime minister discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the Region, as well as the fight against IS militants.
&ldquo; As a key member of the Global Coalition fighting IS, Italy will continue to support the Peshmerga Forces,&rdquo; the statement cited Guerini as saying.
Guerini added that Italy would renew its commitment to the Coalition next month, the statement said.
The KRG premier, for his part, hoped to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and Italy.
The Kurdistan Region Presidency also said in a statement that Guerini had expressed Italy&rsquo;s support for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in the fight against terrorism.
Guerini first travelled to Baghdad and met with his Iraqi counterpart Najah al-Shammari.
