Nechirvan Barzani, Halbusi meet in Erbil

<p style="text-align:left">As protests continue in Baghdad and the southern provinces, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Speaker of the Council of Representatives Mohammed al-Halbusi in Erbil on Sunday, December 22.

Barzani and Halbusi discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the issue of forming of a new federal government, as well as several draft laws currently under consideration by the parliament in Baghdad. They were joined in the meeting by federal Minister of Finance Fuad Hussein, the Region&rsquo;s presidency said in a statement.
The two sides agreed to work together to find positive ways to craft solutions that serve the country and meet the legitimate demands of the protesters, who have called for deep reforms to the way Iraq is governed, NRT reported.
They also agreed to &ldquo;jointly support the political process and assist the partners in choosing the next prime minister in line with the will and demands of the people of Iraq,&rdquo; the statement read.
Caretaker Premier Adil Abdul Mahdi resigned last month and the parliament approved his resignation on December 1 after two months of serious anti-government unrest in Baghdad and the southern provinces.
On Sunday, the Iraqi Supreme Federal Court called on President Barham Salih to designate a candidate from the largest bloc in parliament for the position of prime minister.
Protesters have rejected several candidates floated by the political parties, saying that they will not accept anyone who has occupied a position in government before.
The Council of Representatives must approve any new prime minister.
Iraq&rsquo;s top Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, said on Friday that an early election was the only way out of the current unrest gripping the country and a new government should be formed soon.
