U.S. envoy Jeffrey to visit Turkey, Saudi Arabia to discuss Syria

<p style="text-align:left">U.S. Special Representative for Syria Engagement, James Jeffrey, will visit Turkey and Saudi Arabia between Jan. 9-13 to discuss the latest developments in Syria, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday.

Jeffrey will discuss with senior Turkish officials and members of the Syrian opposition on issues of mutual interest in northern Syria, and the Global Coalition to Defeat IS' continued efforts to ensure an enduring defeat of ISIS in Syria and Iraq, the official statement said.
Turkey launched a military operation on Oct. 9 to clear the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces from areas south of its border where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wishes to create a safe zone to resettle Syrian refugees, millions of whom are currently residing in Turkey.
Tens of thousands of ISIS members, including some 2,000 foreign fighters and their families, are being held in detention camps scattered throughout northeast Syria.
Turkey&rsquo;s military offensive against Kurdish-held territories in northern Syria has sparked concerns that the jihadist group could launch a resurgence.
