Angelina Jolie visits camp in Kurdistan Region

UN refugee agency special envoy Angelina Jolie on Sunday (June 17) visited the displaced families in the province of Duhok, Kurdistan Region, in her fifth trip to Iraq since 2001, a UNHCR report said.

The trip marked her second visit to Duhok and came on the third day of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan, NRT reported.

During a visit to the refugee camp of Domiz in Duhok, the Hollywood actress expressed gratitude on behalf of UNHCR for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for providing shelter for the Iraqi and Syrian people affected by violence.

"I want to thank the people of Iraq for their generosity towards Syrian refugees and displaced and the KRI [KRG] government for setting an example for refugee protection," she said.

Jolie was in Mosul the previous day where she met families from western Mosul and walked through bombed-out streets.

She urged the international community to assist the residents who try to rebuild the city of Mosul.

"This is the worst devastation I have seen in all my years working with UNHCR. People here have lost everything," Jolie said in a UN statement.

"They are destitute. They have no medicine for their children, and many have no running water or basic services," she said. "I hope there will be a continued commitment to rebuilding and stabilizing the whole of the city. And I call on the international community not to forget Mosul."
