Iraqi parliament to vote budget on Thursday

Member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives’ Economic and Investment Committee Mithaq al-Hamidi said on Wednesday, March 17, that lawmakers will vote on both the 2021 Federal Budget Law and the Federal Court Law during a parliamentary session on Thursday.

Al-Hamidi stated that Speaker Muhammed al-Halbusi has announced the decision.

“All provisions of the Federal Court Law have been voted on [individually] and a vote on the entire law remains, which requires two-thirds quorum,” he said.

According to NRT the parliament held sessions on Monday and Tuesday about the Federal Court Law, but ended up postponing the final vote until Thursday.

A delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and Iraq’s President Barham Salih ahead of the vote on the budget.

The KRG and the federal government have been involved in tense negotiations over the budget for nearly a year, several times announcing the outlines of an agreement only to have politicians pull back from actually moving forward with implementation.
