Iraqi Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani, who traveled to Paris at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday this week, met with Macron and several senior officials on Tuesday, March 30.
Citing France's role in creating a no-fly zone in northern Iraq to prevent Saddam Hussein from continuing its attacks on Iraqi Kurds in the 1990s, The British newspaper Levant described the relationship between Iraqi Kurds and the French government as historic.
The daily has reported that France had taken the initiative before the US support for the Kurdish-Kurdish talks in Syria, with the support of Nechirvan Barzani and added that inviting Barzani to Paris is not unrelated to France's support to better ties between the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdish Autonomous Administration in the north of Syria.
Levant also cited the France's efforts to resolve Iraq's internal disputes, especially the political and economic problems between the Kurdish region and the Iraqi central government, as another reason for inviting Barzani to visit Paris.
The newspaper cited the French president's efforts to boost economic co-operation between Paris, Baghdad and Erbil, as well as pave the way for more French companies to be present in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, as another reason for inviting Barzani to make an official visit to Paris.
