Omar Taspinar and Michael O'Hanlon from the National Defense University and the Brookings Institution advised, in a joint note published in the National Interest magazine, President-elect Joe Biden to withdraw US troops from Syria and not leave the Syrian Kurds alone.
The two scholars working on Kurdish issues and the Middle East affairs have stressed that Joe Biden must convince Turkey that cooperation between the United States and Syrian Kurdish forces is about fighting the ISIS, not the independence of the Syrian Kurds.
The two researchers believe that the United States should seek more peace between Turkey, the Syrian government and the Kurds, and then think about withdrawing its forces from Syria.
Omar Taspinar and Michael O’Hanlon also emphasize Biden's behind-the-scenes efforts to bring peace to the Turkish government and the Kurds. Of course, they think that this is possible by putting pressure on the PKK to lay down its arms.
