Official says Peshmerga will not return to Kirkuk

No decision has been made for the Peshmerga to return to Kirkuk amid moves to improve coordination with Baghdad, Deputy Chief of Staff of Peshmerga Training and Operations Major General, Qaraman Kamal, said on Saturday, May 22.

Commenting on the establishment of joint coordination centers with the Iraqi Security Forces, Kamal stated that four new centers focused on Khanaqin, Kirkuk, Mosul, and Makhmour will open this week with the aim of improving security in the disputed areas.
Recently officials in both Erbil and Baghdad have expressed concern about the security vacuum in the disputed areas, which allows Islamic State (ISIS) to stage attacks against both civilian and military targets.
The Peshmerga was pushed out of Kirkuk and the disputed areas in October 2017 by the Iraqi Security Forces and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) following the Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum.
