PUK backs Peshmerga unification: co-president

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Co-President Lahur Sheikh Jangi said during a meeting with a veterans’ group on Sunday, June 20, that his party supports the unification of the Peshmerga within the context of reforming the Kurdistan Region’s military force.

While some Peshmerga units are organized under the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, most Peshmerga serve in units affiliated with either the PUK or the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
Supported by the Region’s foreign partners, the KRG has developed plans to unify and professionalize the Peshmerga, but progress has been halting.
Sheikh Jangi also said that the PUK wants to avoid any “fratricide” between the Peshmerga and other Kurdish factions, referring to the current tensions between the KDP and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), NRT reported.
He added that the PUK supports the demands of veterans group, saying that it is their right to demand full pension payments.
