Fuad Hussein officially elected as Iraq’s foreign minister

<p style="text-align: left;">The new Iraqi foreign minister officially took the office after a vote of confidence from parliament on Sunday, June 6.

According to Middle East News Fuad Hussein, a Kurd and a leading member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), took the office from former foreign minister during a ceremony on Sunday.

"We have no choice but to continue our work to boost our ties and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will move towards strengthening balanced relations based on the realization of Iraqi interests, the aspirations of the nation and the implementation of Iraqi foreign policy within the framework of the government's plan," Hussein said during the ceremony at the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The KDP had affirmed that the ministry is for the Kurds and Hussein will take the office, declaring that, according to the agreements with Iraqi PM Mustafa al-Kadhimi, the ministry should go to the Kurds.

Some Iraqi parliament members from the Fatah Coalition were against Fuad Hussein to take the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the other hand, according to agreements between Iraq political parties, no ministers were expected to be in the government of Al-Kadhimi, but Hussein is the only minister in the new cabinet that was a member of the former government led by Adil Abdul Mahdi, Hussein was the finance minister of the former government.
