US presence in Syrian Kurdistan is symbolic and limited, official tells Kurdpress

The representative of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in the Balkans told Kurdpress in an interview that the US troops are in Syrian Kurdistan only for political support, and the number of their forces is very limited.

Dr. Ibrahim Muslim, the representative of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in the Balkans and a member of the party's general council, said that "there is a big difference between the situation in Afghanistan and Syrian Kurdistan and no one can compare the two examples and claim that such a US move [withdrawing from Afghanistan] would be repeated in Syrian Kurdistan."

"Afghanistan does not have much strategic and geographical importance for the United States, and especially in recent years, Russia and China have become a bigger security threat to the United States," Dr. Muslim added.

He pointed out that "the next issue was corruption in the Afghanistan government, which despaired the people and the military of Afghanistan and diminished patriotism needed for defending the land [country]."

The party official added: "The situation in Syrian Kurdistan is very different and the United States is facing a new example in which democracy, human rights and the rights of minorities are respected and the people rule; and it is the strongest example of democracy among its neighbors."

The PYD representative in the Balkans went on to say: "I do not think that the United States will leave Syrian Kurdistan soon because the situation in this region is different from Afghanistan. American troops are present in this region only for political support. Their forces are very limited. Kurdish forces on the ground have established protection and security in this area."
