The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Peshmerga said a number of Katyusha rockets were fired toward the frontlines of the Peshmerga forces in Prde sub-district on Friday evening.

“The rockets fired in east and south of Prde landed outside the Peshmerga’ frontlines,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Kurdish forces had launched initial investigations, the ministry added.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s security media cell said the security forces had found eight bases where the rockets were fired.

The security forces began an investigation into the attack, it said in a statement.

It was still unclear who fired the rockets toward the Peshmerga forces’ frontlines in the area.

Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked the Peshmerga forces in the sub-district in the past months.

The Peshmerga forces repelled an ISIS attack in Prde in November. Two members of the Kurdish forces were killed in another ISIS attack in the end of October.

Kurdish officials have long blamed a lack of coordination along a stretch of territory claimed by both Baghdad and Erbil for ISIS’ continued ability to wage deadly attacks.

Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
