Iran’s IRGC claimed responsibility for a ballistic missile attack that struck Erbil after midnight on Sunday near the new US consulate, which is currently under construction.
The IRGC said the attack was targeting a Zionist "strategic center.”
Sadr’s office confirmed he spoke with Barzani on Sunday and both sides agreed to form a fact-finding committee to investigate the veracity of an Israeli headquarters in Erbil, according to Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The US Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman, told Fox News the US does not believe the consulate was the target of the missile strike on Sunday.
Sadr called for the Iraqi authorities to issue a note of protest against the incident to the United Nations and Iran’s ambassador, according to INA.
He stated in a post on Twitter that Iraq "should not be used as an arena for political, security and military conflicts.”
"Whoever claims that there are Israeli sites, it must be investigated as soon as possible,” he said, adding, "It should not be used as an excuse to destabilize the security of Iraq and its people.”
