“Heartfelt congratulations to Nadia Murad Basee for receiving Nobel Peace Prize. I admire her courage and activism, and the entire people of Kurdistan are proud of her,” Barzani said in an official statement on Friday.
Murad, from a village near Sinjar, has survived the Islamic State’s (IS) inhuman sex slavery, and she has lost her mother and six brothers at the hand of the jihadists group, BasNews reported.
After her survival, she began advocating for the rights of the victims of human trafficking. She later became a UN goodwill ambassador.
Barzani pointed out in his statement that the Nobel Peace Prize is for the entire Kurdish Yezidi people, whose courage at the face of IS massacre, is now known across the globe. He hoped that the prize could heal part of the pain of the people of Kurdistan.
“Ms. Nadia Murad, who is the symbol of Yezidi’s sufferings and their courage to encounter terror, is now carrying a peaceful message to the world. On her path, she has always had our full support, and she will always have it,” Barzani’s statement added.
