Crowds consisting mainly of supporters of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr gathered in Tahrir Square across the river from the Green Zone.
They have reportedly managed to break through the barricades and cross Jumhuriya Bridge toward the Green Zone, according to local media.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi issued an announcement asking protesters to stay safe and maintain security. He has called on security forces to protect the protesters.
According to NRT some protesters were wounded trying to climb over the walls fortifying the Green Zone.
The reporter added security forces have not used any kind of violence against the protesters.
The crowds are demonstrating against the political deadlock following months of failed attempts to form the Iraqi government and against the nomination of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the candidate for prime minister from the Coordination Framework.
Protestors were seen holding pictures of Sadr and chanting, "Yes, yes for Muqtada.”
Supporters of Sadr previously broke into the Green Zone and the parliament building on Wednesday in protest against Sudani’s nomination.
The leader of the Hikma Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, gave a speech in Tahrir Square on Friday evening where he insisted Sudani was the only candidate from the Coordination Framework.
Angered by his statements, some supporters of Sadr surrounded and shut down headquarters of the Hikma Movement in Baghdad and other cities in southern Iraq.
