Coordination Framework asks Ayatollah Sistani to intervene amid Sadr’s protests

The Coordination Framework has asked the leading spiritual authority in Iraq, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, to intervene in the protests triggered by prominent Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

A source in Coordination Framework told local news agencies that the bloc has called on Sistani to announce his stance and stop Sadr from instructing his follower to take to the streets in protest.
Ayatollah Sistani is commonly considered one of the most powerful and influential Shia marja (authority) and a spiritual leader of Shia Muslims.
The source stated Sadr would be responsible for any bloodshed in Iraq and that the Coordination Framework wants him to normalize the situation and resume the talks.
Sadr’s supporters resumed protests on Saturday, entering the parliament building inside the Green Zone to demonstrate against the nomination of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the candidate for prime minister from the Coordination Framework.
The demonstration was also against the political deadlock in the country, which has prevented the new government from forming after elections last year.
Sudani said on Friday he will not withdraw his nomination.
