UNAMI chief, Masoud Barzani discuss Iraq political situation in Salahadin

The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, met with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, in Salahadin province to discuss the political situation in Iraq on Monday, August 22.

According to NRT, Plasschaert warned the Kurdistan Region’s officials against the consequences of delaying elections.
She warned the political situation in Kurdistan could become similar to Iraq’s if elections are not held on time and the parties do not work on solving issues between them.
She also stated the opposition should be part of meetings between the political party leaders in the Region.
According to the report Plasschaert had asked the Kurdistan Region’s officials to schedule a date by next month, to hold elections.
Fawzi Hariri, the head of the Diwan of the Kurdistan Region’s Presidency, said earlier this month that October 1 had already been set as the date for the Kurdistan Region’s parliamentary elections but some Kurdish parties appeared reluctant to hold the polls.
Hariri added, if the parties currently came to an agreement the electoral commission would not have time to set up the election and predicted the polls would be held in the first quarter of 2023.
